Does anyone else find this sad in Lord of the Rings?

At the end of the first movie, when Frodo says to Sam, "I don't suppose we'll ever see them again" because right at the end - they all go their seperate ways, and you really do wonder if they ever do see each other again... Just a film I know. Its meant to be real though, it was well acted and the characters almost become real.
