Why are Fantasy characters Entitled hero's these days?

I remember in Lord of the Rings Frodo openly volunteers to carry the RING into Mordor and the wise council discusses and then agrees. Now a days the Heroic character is BORN into being the one who will save everything and save the day! Why are there not any voluntary hero's anymore. Is Destiny just to tempting for authors?
